I'm probably the last person in the world to try this stuff. I know it's been getting rave reviews in blogs and magazines, but I was scared off by 1) the fact that the colors looked pretty bright judging from the packaging and 2) my past experiences with lipstains, which have been unanimously, overwhelmingly awful.
I love the idea of a lipstain. I like the way they look when applied well, and any lip product that's truly durable enough to last many hours without reapplication is a big winner. Unfortunately, though lipstains sound great in theory, they've been a hot mess in reality. All that I've tried have had application issues (runny, patchy, highlighted every imperfection), color issues (pulled unflatteringly neon), or both. Benetint is horrible on me. I have never been able to make it work, and am baffled by its cult status. The Lorac rollerball lipstain (Sheer Wash) was a patchy fuschia horror. I've tried many felt-tip marker lipstains, and none have ever worked out.
I tested Cover Girl Outlast in Sassy Mauve.
I am really, really impressed! This product is great. I'm a fair-skinned brunette with pink undertones and very dark hair. Sassy Mauve is a perfect romantic rosy stain. The lipstain is very moist (sorry, I know some people hate that word!), and glided on and blended very easily. I had no problems with unnatural-looking edges or liplines. (I'll edit this post with a swatch picture once my lip heals; I bit it earlier this week and it doesn't look too pretty today.)
I've been wearing a lot of silk and chiffon blouses with ruffles recently; this romantic stain coordinates perfectly with those, and will be going into heavy rotation. Well done, Cover Girl! This is the best lipstain I've ever used by far.
